FIVE BY-ELECTIONS. PARTIES VERY CLOSE. (Received 9 a.m.) WASHINGTON, November 3. The Democrats won three out of five by-elections today to fill vacancies in Congress caused by the deaths of members. The position of parties in the next House of Representatives will be: : — Democrats *. 217 Republicans 215 Farmer Labour 2 There are still two vacant seats. The election to be held in New Jersey . on December 1 will probably add one more to the Republican total.
NEW YORK CITY VOTING. TAMMANY JUBILANT. (Received 9 a.m.) NEW YORK, November 3, In the city elections the Mayoralty was not contested. Tammany Hall placed its candidates in the lesser posts with record majorities, in spite of the city scandal, investigations, and so forth. Tammany hailed the results as an 1 expression of the great public confidence in its office-holders, but the investigations into the actions of some of the office-holders, which will be continued, will produce daily more astounding allegations of graft.
