The Land Laws Amendment Bill was introduced in the House of Representatives yesterday by Governor-Gen-eral’s message and was read a first time. Explaining the measure, the Minister of Lands, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, said it gave power to review rents and leases of 'Crown tenants in . thei light of present economic conditions. Many leases had been renewed during ■the past two or three years, andthe the bill would empower the Crown ,td revert to the original lease in cases of hardship. The bill also gave power to extend this provision for five years.

Under the measure, district committees, consisting of .three members, of whom one would be a commissioner of land, would be'set up to investigate •the position of Crown tenants. It was the aim of the Government to give these tenants as much relief as possible. The Education Reserves Amendment Bill was similarly introduced and read a first time.
