NEW ZEALAND ELECTION
VARIOUS CANDIDATES AU&KLAND WEST CONTEST. MB MACKENZIE' TO STAND. (Special to "Northern Advocate.”) AUCKLAND, Tuesday. A decision to go to the poll against all other candiates has been made by Mr H. R. Mackenzie, the United candidate for Auckland West. A large, enthusiastic meeting was held last evening, when Mr E. Stallworthy, president of the United West political organisation, presided. He said this morning that full preparations, including the formation of women’s committees, had been made for the campaign.
A meeting of friends and supporters of Mr J.. A. C. Allum, Reform Coalition candidate, was held at the Leys Institute. Mr A. C. Nordenwas elected chairman of the campaign organisation, with Mr A. Lyon Griffiths as secretary. Auckland Central. An endeavour is being made to induce Mr T. Lamont to contest the Auckland Central seat against the sitting Labour member, Mr W. E. Parry. So far Mr Lamont has not made a decision. Hauraki Seat. The Coalition candidate for Hauraki is Mr W. W. Massey, M.P. Mr C. R. Petrie is the official Labour candidate. There is a possibility of the Country party putting a candidate in the field. A suggestion has been made that a Country party candidate would not- be put forward for Hauraki if the. Labour party did not run a Labour candidate in Franklin electorate.
WELLINGTON SEATS.

(Per Press Association. —Copyright.) WELLINGTON, This Day. With one exception, the Coalition candidates to contest the five Wellington’seats at the general election in ' December have been selected. They are’ as follows: Wellington Central. —Mr Robert Daroch (United). Wellington South—Mr N. A. Foden (Reform). Wellington North. —Mr G. A. Troup (Reform). Wellington Suburbs.—Mr R. A. Wright, M.P. (Refprm). ' The official Coalition candidate for the* Hutt seat will be Mr James Kerr. jjfo announcement has been made as to the selection of the Coalition candv ’ date for Wellington East. The choice will lie between Messrs T. Forsyth, J. J. Clark and W. J. Gaudin.
ELECTORS’ DUTY.
COMPULSORY ENROLMENT.

Speaking in the House of Representatives yesterday, the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, agreed to issue a notification informing electors of the legal necessity to enrol. It was specially desirable at a time like the present that every eligible person should vote.
A number of men had urged that unemployed men should be engaged as poll clerks, and Mr Forbes stated that instructions had already been issued that consideration should be given to those out of work.

Replying to points raised during the discussion of the Electoral Department vote in the House of Representatives yesterday, the Prime Minister said that in the past it had been found undesirable for scrutineers to be present in Maori polling booths while voting was in progress. Under the system adopted, -there was an “open vote,” which was preferred by the natives to a secret one. -Scrutineers were admitted at the time the votes were being counted.

Mr Vincent Ward, United M.P. for Invercargill, said in an interview that the announcement of Mr W. MeChesney’s selections as the United Coalition candidate for Invercargill
might convey a wrong impression regarding his own "position. The fact was that some time ago he had indicated that for business reasons he would npt be able to contest Invercargill at present.
“I was asked last week to reconsider that decision,” added Mr Ward, “but in fairness to the people of Invercargill I felt that, while I appreciate greatly the honour of the invitation, under the present circumstances, with my business in Wellington, I could not do justice,to affairs in my constituency.' I feel sure that the people of Invercargill will appreciate the attitude . i have been obliged to take."
COALITION CANDIDATES,
AUCKLAND WEST SEAT. (From Our Parliamentary Special.) WELLINGTON, This Day. When asked today whether Mr Allum had been endorsed as official Coalition candidate for Auckland West, Mr Coates said no candidate lias yet been officially selected. It was the intention of Mr Forbes and himself to issue, within the next few days, a list of “the first batch” of official Coalition nominees,
