GENERAL ELECTION
UNITED PARTY OPTIMISM. EULOGY OF MR. FORBES. (Special to “Northern Advocate.") CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. That a carefully considered estimate, making allowances for doubtful seats, gave only three Reform members in the South Island after the next election, was a statement made by Mr. R. W. Hawke on Saturday night at - a mooting of the United Party, as indicating a swing over to the United Party.
Mr. Hawke said eleven Reform stalwarts had recently invaded Taranaki, and were busy now trying to forget the reception they had. Men who three years ago had voted Reform now offered their services to the United Party. Every mail brought letters showing that every act of Mr. Forbes had gone to the hearts of the people. His strength, his steadfastness, his ability, and his work were recognised. His labours were not for himself and not for his party, but for his country. He inspired confidence. When false optimism would have given an easy path, Mr. Forbes preferred the harder road of facing facts and putting his house in order.
