ADVANCES TO SETTLERS MORTGAGE.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—ln your issue of August 3 appears a Report of , a speech by the Hon. A. J. Murdoch. He quotes me as saying, “The Advances to Settlers mortage today is about the worst mortgage in New Zealand. ’ ’ That quotation by itself is very misleading. I was speaking of the payment of principal in addition to interest in times of stress, and I maintained that the Government, when a farmer was in difficulties, should consider the postponement of the principal and put the payments on to the end of the term. It was the payment of principal and interest together by a man in financial difficulties that I objected to. Mr Murdoch says the Government hag no such power.!! know that quite well, but it only requires a slight amendment of the law to give the Department the power.—l am, etc, • DAVID JONES.
