A fish about 30 inches- long with eight arms seven< inches long and two 12 inches long; was caught in a shallow pool on" the Hukuwai Beach near Opotifci recently. The shape and colour were similar ,to that of the - gurnard. At the tail; there were two large fins" 1 seven inches wide. .

It was identified by Mr Francis, an authority ,on fish, who is visiting Ofmtikq as- a sqtiid of a species which is common on the New England coast of the United States, bht, so far as he knew, it had not been reported in New Zealand waters before. The fish was sent to the Dominiou Museum. ’ -
