SHEEP WORRIERS
CAUGHT.IN THE ACT. TWO CULPRITS CHASED. An exciting chase yesterday morn-, ing resulted in two dogs which have been worrying sheep in the Whangarei district paying the price for their misdeeds.
From the Grotto Gardens, Mr S. Watt heard furious barking and, look* ing out, saw the dogs chasing Mr E. K. Plaisted’s sheep, which were grazing on the Harbour Board’s property. A party comprising Messrs Plaisted, Watt, S. Bignell and R. H. Allan, armed themselves with guns and sot out to get the marauders. A flying shot just reached one of the miscreants, a cattle dog, which escaped, although slightly wounded. However, Mr Plaisted had recognised the animal, and the gunmen, concentrated upon getting the Airedale. It took to the broken country at the back of Parahaki, and had it not been for Mr Plaisted’s stock dog, which has had considerable pig-hnnt-ing experience, would have probably won its freedom. However, after two hours’ scrambling through the bush and tea-tree, the expedition was successful in making a kill.
Before the discovery yesterday the dogs had destroyed four sheep, and on a previous occasion recently Mr Plaisted lost ten sheep through a similar cause.
The owners of the dogs were interviewed this* morning, and it is understood that a satisfactory settlement was arranged.
