THE DAIRY INDUSTRY
One of the proposals put before the annual conference of the South Island Dairy Association involved the creation of a new controlling body, designed, it would seem, to secure better coordination in tne industry, and out of the discussion emerged the appointment of a committee to attend the conference of the North Island association to press for some scheme by which this better co-ordination can be secured. An investigation designed to bring about better co-ordina-tion can do much good, but if the project results in the creation of another authority the industry will find that it has done little more than add to the machinery, thus increasing the opportunities for overlapping. It would appear, in the opinion of the ‘‘Southland Times,” that in the energetic extension of farm instruction there is a promise of much better results, especially if it is accompanied by better articulation within the Dairy Division, with closer contact with the manufacturers. At same time the problems of the industry stretch beyond the shores of this country and, taking into account the immense amount of money involved in cheese and butter, it looks as if more should be done to improve the connection between the London and New Zealand ends of the grading. Britain is the principal market, and the British consumer is the final grader, whose marks really determine the value of the factories’ products. There are serious obstacles in the way of putting all the grading in Britain, but a large increase in the staff in the Old Country,, with frequent interchanges to keep the New Zealand graders in personal touch with British conditions, would yield results making the additional expenditure worth while.
