NEW MAIN HIGHWAYS
LOCAL ROADS RECOMMENDED, Tho annual meeting of No. 1 District Main Highways Council' will be held in* Whangarei on June 25. - At the meeting of the Whangarei' County Council yesterday, the chairman, Mr L Webb, who is the County representative on the council, said that the date was inconvenient to ,him, tas he had been elected to represent the Hikurangi Dairy Company at the Northern Dairy Association Conference, which would thofi bo in session. However, he left it with the council, and was quite prepared to attend the highways mooting if desired. Members expressed the opinion that the chairman should represent tho county, as his experience of highways work could not be equalled by a substitute.
Mr Webb agreed to attend the meeting in Whangarei and to ask the Hikurang! directorate to appoint some one in his stead to travel to New Plymouth. It was decided to reaffirm the applications for the inclusion of HikurangiJordan, Hikuraugi-Marua and Parua Bay continuation roads in the main highways system. These roads have previously been recommended by the Northern -Council.
Cr. •Stephen thought that strong representations. should also be made to have tho Mangapai-Waikiekic Road de-‘ dared a. main highway. No Toad in his riding was a main highway,' ami the section mentioned was a* vitally important through route. Cv. J.,A. S. Mac Kay supported this, and said that there wore several roads in his riding which* justified' inclusiop in the system, but ho could , not ask for it while such an important road as that between Mangapai -and Waikiekie remained outside. ,
The chairman promised that he would again urge the claims .of this road.
