BOOKMAKER FINED

PENALTY OF £2O. (Special to “Northern Advocate.”) TE AROHA, This Day. At the Te Aroha Magistrate’s. Court yesterday, Walter Geo. Nesbitt Howard, confectioner, of Waitoa, was charged with carrying on the business of a. bookmaker. Mr T. Carroll, for defendant, entered a. strong plea for leniency on account of defendant’s previous good character, and the fact that he had given the police every assistance in their investigations. This was defendant’s first appearance in court and he was deeply sorry for his offence. Constable Sutton said that, as the result of a fairly long period of suspicion, Constable Hodge visited the defendant’s shop and made two small bets. A search revealed a small quantity of bookmaking material, but there was nothing to indicate that the business was carried on to any great extent. The Magistrate, Mr F. W. Platts, said that under the circumstances defendant would be fined £2O and costs.
