FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE

RETENTION OF EMBARGO. / (Per Pres* Association,-—OopyrlgHS.) PALMERSTON N., This Day. A mass meeting of farmers was held yesterday to discuss problems affecting the industry. A resolution'was passed that ‘ ‘ this combined meeting of the Farmers’*Union ’and the Dairy Farmers’ Union strenuously protests against the. action of the Board of Agriculture in recommending the removal of restrictions on the importations of stock from Great Britain, thereby leaving New Zealand liable to foot-and-mouth s disease.” ANOTHER PROTEST. DELAY ADVISED. WELLINGTON, This Day. “The New Zealand Farmers’ Union has been consistently opposed to the lifting of the present embargo on the importation of stock from Britain,” said Mr Pow, secretary of the union, with reference to the Board of Agriculture’s recommendation favouring the raising of the embargo. He had written to the Minister asking that nothing definite be done until the question could be discussed fully at a meeting of the Farmers’ Union executive early next month. The union had always looked upon relaxing any regulations governing the importation of cattle with disfavour, and would strenuously oppose the recommendation of the Board of Agriculture.
