PORTLAND NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Welfare League. The monthly meeting of the Management Committee of the above was held in the Portland Hall on Monday night. .Mr F. Boyd presided over, an attendance of Messrs A. J. Magee, P. Mce, D. Lorimer, L. F. Morgan, W. Purchase and E. Hay (secretary). Correspondence. - Wilsons (N.Z.) Portland Cement, Ltd., wrote acknowledging receipt of the monthly report, also the annual repayment of £SO off the loan for improvements, etc. The National Committee’s communication dealt with cinema matters. The Portland Bowling Club intimated that it would make a gift of some ammonium sulphate for use on the cro-, quot lawn. The secretary was asked to, convey the League’s thanks to the bowling club for this donation. The Salvation Army, the Rev. Jasper Caldcr and 4he Sunshine League each wrote expressing their thanks for and appreciation of the sum of £lO 10s from tho Portland Earthquake Relief Fund. The .Library Committee applied for a subsidy on March subscriptions. The sum of 17/6 ( was granted. The Rugby League, Rugby, and Ladies’ Hockey Clubs’ application for use of the ground and pavilion for the ensuing season was granted on the usual conditions. Reports. The treasurer reported credit balances at 31/3/31 as—Bank of New Zealand £BB 17s and P.O. Savings Bank £26 Os lid. The secretary’s report stated that receipts for .March were £53 11s 6d and expenditure £96 13s 4d, the large expenditure being due to repayment of £SO off the Loan Account, billiards and canteen sub-committee. The receipts were up to the average. A snooker tournament is now in progress. Minor repairs had, been carried out to billiards tables. The Cinema Sub-committee, advised that receipts were better Phan in the previous month, 34 monthly tickets having been sold. It was decided to screen pictures on Friday of' next week, as Saturday was Anzac Day. Library.—The annual meeting of subscribers was held and a strong committee elected.

Sunday School. —The annual prizegiving had taken place on Sunday, March 15, when 30 scholars received awards. .

Band.—The band bad played at Waiotira Show, and the annual picnic was held at Ruakaka Beach.

Grounds.—The grass and rubbish around the trees and hedges had been cleared away. On the request of the green-keeper, it was decided to secure soil for top-dressing the croquet lawn. General.

Accounts amounting to £53 4s 5d were passed for payment.

It was resolved to have necessary work carried out on the croquet lawn, as outlined by the green-keeper, Mr Davies.. ,

A subsidy of 17s 6d was granted to the Library Committee. The balance in hand of the Earthquake Relief Fund is to be equally divided between the Salvation Army, Anglican City Mission and Sunshine League, The secretary submitted a draft of the annual/report, and cash statement (which were Approved) to be presented to the' annual meeting, the date of which is to be decided wben the books are returned from audit.

The value of the League’s assets as set out in the annual stock sheets was assessed at £2558 10s 4d. • Obituary. By the death of Mr D. T. Forbes, the township loses one of its hardest social workers. He was connected with practically all the various activities, his greatest work being accomplished on the School •Committee. ’ He had been a nieiAber of that body for 11 years, acting for two years as secretary and nine years as chairman. As a member and chairman of the Welfare League, his work ie well known. At the time of his death the deceased, amongst other positions, was vice-presi-dent of the Wilsons Employees’ Cement Workers’ Union and vice-presi-dent of the Portland Rugby League.

The respect in which deceased was held was exemplified by the large number of mourners who were present at the funeral at Kioreroa cemetery on Wednesday. Amongst the many beautiful wreaths sent were these of Wilsons (N.Z.) Portland Cement Co., fellow employees, Wilsons'Cement Employees’ Union, the "\Velfare League, “The Leviathan,” the staff of the Farmers’ Trading Co., the teachers and scholars of Portland School, the Portland School Committee, the Portland Rugby League, and the Whangarei Hockey Association.

An impressive service was conducted at the graveside by Rev. W. Elliott* Fellow workers acted as pail-bearers. The sincere sympathy of Portland goes out to the bereaved widow and family.
