ARCHBISHOP REDWOOD. i • D2nd EIIRTHDAY. (Special to “Northern Advocate.”) WELLINGTON, This Day. To(|ay his Grace, Archbishop Redwood, celebrates his 92nd birthday. His Grace, who was born in Staffordshire, and came to New Zealand when practically an infant, is enjoying remarkably good health, and carries out his manifold duties in connection with the control of the Roman Catholic Church in the Dominion with unimpaired activity. At the age of 15 years he aspired to the priesthood, and made rapid progress with his studies, particularly languages. He was called to Ireland in 1863 to teach Latin and Greek at the Marist College at Dundalk. On January 6th, 1864, he made his religious profession as a Marist, and the following year he w T as ordained priest. In 1872 his superiors stated' that they wished to appoint him co-adjutator to Bishop Yiard, then in Wellington. While negotiations were in progress, news reached England of the death of Bishop Viard. In 1874 the Archbishop was appointed Bishop of Wellington, and entered upon those duties which he has performed so well for theTlast 57 years.
