A CLOSE CALL
FISHERMAN ’S LUCKY ESCAPE. (Per Press Association.—CoDsrteln.) BLENHEIM, This Day. During the week-end, Mr, D, Rapatini, of South Bay, Kaikoura, had a narrow escape from disaster. When fishing about 200 yards from shore lie noticed the weather threatening from the east. He immediately hauled up the anchor, but, when about half way to the shore, one oar snapped, and he hail to lower anchor again. The seas gradually became worse, and he decided to drift with the wind, in the hope of landing along the coast. While I steering the boat with the remaining oar, he managed to keep in shore, and eventually lauded at Kahataran River, five miles away. His plight was noticed previously by a fisherman, who sot out iii search, When all hope had been practically given up, Mr. Rapatini returned home, having been picked up by a service ear.
