The actions of Mr J. T. Lang and the Red extremists who support him in New South Wales have left no doubt as to their fealty to the doctrines of Moscow. They are obviously prepared, if the opportunity ever offers, to institute Soviet Government and put Australia under Communistic rule. This was made plain at the New South Wales State Labour Conference held at Sydney during Easter. Mr Lang declared himself straight-out in favour of the socialisation of industry, and this was followed by the introduction of a startling proposal for a three years plan of social transition. A resolution to this effect was moved by Mr Lang’s brother-in-law. Putt into plain language, the motion envisaged a Soviet Government’ of a Communist State, for the plan aimed at vesting in a People’s Government the ownership and control of all property, and the administration of all industries, including banking, by national and industrial commissions and sub-commissions, with, workers and producers directly represented on them. The motion was earvied by 57 to ,44 votes. The adoption of this proposal naturally mused a stir in New' South Wales, The “Sydney Morning Herald” declared that “the gauntlet is down. Communism, naked and unashamed, has flung its defiance in the face of the State and the Empire, and neither Parliament nor the public shall count.’” The “Daily Telegraph” said that while some people would he alarmed at the socialisation plan and others would be merely amused, one section would be gratified. * i That section, which has nothing to lose, is the stuff of which revolutions arc made.” The editorial comments so accurately reflect the true position that everybody with a. sense of responsibility must agree that “the ealMs for co-operation to combat this urgent and emergent evil. Australians must declare emphatically that they will not have it. Evidently the delegates to the Labour Conference, when they considered the warning their extreme resolution has given the anti-Bolshevik section in Australia, realised that zeal had outrun discretion, for, on reassembling, they revoked, by 65 to 35 votes, their decision of the previous evening. The compromise “watered down the plan of socialisation to provide merely for the propagation of the aims and ideals of the three years’ plan.” This recantation'is all very well. But it has been made too laic. The wolf has shed his sheeps clothing, and he will have a veryj difficult task, no - matter what disguise he may wear in future, to convince the public that he is not the same old wolf.
