FIRECLAY DUES
NO ACTION TAKEN, The District Public Trustee, in a letter received yesterday, requested the Harbour Board to reduce tho dues on fireclay from the estate of the late C, E. R. Mackcsey, Awaroa Creek. If }was contended that if the proposal to abolish dues on fireclay at Ngimgimi were made effective the Awaroa Creek mine would be unfairly handicapped. Tin* engineer said that a wharf was constructed at Awaroa Creek in ff»24 at a cost of £fil. Since then revenue collected amounted to £4O. The harbour board had made no provision for assisting the producers at Ngunguru, and legally was not entitled to collect duos unless money was spent in improving the harbour. ■ Air J. F. Holmes expressed the opinion that the wharf at Awaroa Creek would not have been built if the board had anticipated the smallness of the trade. Air E. L. Whimp thought it would be unfair to forego collection of the 1/improvement dues at Ngungnrn and continue charging the company operating inside the harbour 1/- improvement and (id wharfage fees. The board decided not to value any alteration in the collection of fireclay dues at either Ngunguru or Awaroa Creek.
