THE BAND CONTEST
REASONS FOR. POSTPONEMENT,
(Per Press Association.—Couvrlght.)
WELLINGTON, Tins Day
Reaeons for the postponement of the Band Contest were 'outlined by the president of the North Island Brass Bands Association, Mr H. I). Bennett. The decision was arrived at unanimously at a combined meeting of members of local and national bodies Bands domiciled outside Wellington had been circularised by telegram. The majority of the replies favoured postponement. Prior to the earthquake, purely because of the general depression, the question of postponement was considered. Then Hawke ; s Bay catastrophe, came. Further, a group of bands from that district added to the ever growing list of non-participants. Of thirteen senior bands nominated, certainties were reduced to four. These included I two local bands. Of the more niunerlons second (B) grade bands, the surj vivals numbered nine out of 3,1, with jno certainty that, the bottom had been reached. Obviously, the contest was losing its national character, especially among first grade bands. Behind the decision was the thought lof the tragedy in Hawke’s Bay.
