WHANG ARE! INCIDENCE. ' STRENUOUS RELIEF EFFORTS. LOCAL BODIES CONFER. There was an assembly at the Borough Council Chambers last night, in order to meet Mr 0. Mcßrine, a representative of the Unembloyment Board. Delegates from the Whangarei Borough Council, the Whangarei County Council, the Hikurangi, Onerahi and Kamo Town Boards, and the Whangarei Harbour Board were present, as was Mr H. M. Hopper, for the Labour Department and the Whangarei Hospital. Mr Mcßrine, outlined the ideas contained in No. 'Scheme pertaining to the rationing of labour in connection with the subsidies to local bodies. The scheme (previously published in cxtenso) provides for a rationing of two days’ work a week at 14/ a day for single men, three days’ work for a man wit); a wife, or a wife and one child, and aid for a wife and two or more children, the work to be other than that, provided in tlie estimates for the year.

Considerable discussion took place and the representatives present, speaking for their principals, proffered their utmost exertions to provide work. They one and all decided to ration all the labour possible.

Jt was stated that 40 men under this scheme were being- employed b\ the County Council. The Hospital authorities expected to provide v»ork for 10 men. The Borough Council intended to open up works for a number, while the various town boards’ representatives agreed to do ail in their power for those in their areas.
