Proceeds of all gates taken at '.Rugby Union football matches in Whan gar ci on (Saturday were donated to the funds of the Whangarei Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, in appreciation of tlie service which the popular "Zam bucks" render to sport week after week. The afternoon was bleak and' wintry, this having an unfortunate effect upon attendances. A fair crowd at Rugby Park saw a. bright, open match between Old Boys i and Mangakahia. The only factor lacking to make the game really interesting was closer scoring. j Maungakaramea and Hikurangi fought out a scoreless draw, both teams being too strong forward and en the defence. City showed their strength is not limited to club games, for without Innes Finlayson, away with the All Blacks, they beat the Bay cf Islands representatives by eight points to nil. Mangakahia. had an easy chance to score, Curry making a good, but ineffective attempt to kick a penalty. Gladding started an Old Boys' rush in | midfield, passing to Miller, who cm | out three men, to pass to Collins, to j Wilson, who ran over easily for a try. [Abbott missed the kick narrowly. Tho next Old Boys' try came in quick order. Britland opened up to Collins, to Syraes, who side-stepped through the opposition for a nice try. Symes improved.—Old Boys 11, Mangakahia 0. Mangakahia made things lively for a time, Whanga, and EUsdon being prominent.

The Whites got their fourth try when play came across.to Symes’ wing for the speedy runner to, show his track form and outpace the opposition for a try, Foote again failed.—Old Boys 14, Mangakahia 0.

’Symes would have been, away again had not Griffon gone for him low. Mangakahia strove hard to make up the leeway, and compelled Fraser to force. Old worked back to halfway, and Foote broke through a lineout, to pass to Miller, the movement gaining 20 yards. Mangakahia were in a desperate position when the fullback was caught with the ball behind his line. He passed to Cochrane, who lined beautifully, and half time came with the score unaltered.

After the spell Mangakahia attacked. Curry cut in and ran as far as the full-back, before he was collared. From a difficult angle Rika essayed a penalty goal, the kick falling short. A similar result attended Taylor when be took a kick;. There was some pretty handling among the Mangakahia inside men, Collins snapping up the ball from their feet. Fast following up, and a fumble by Fraser, gave Mangakahia their first points. Cochrane and Ruddle chased a kick which Fraser misflelded, and Ruddle was there to score. Curry’s kick struck the posts and rebounded in-field. —Old Boys 14, Mangakahia 3. A period of interesting open play followed, until the Old Boys’ backs got into motion, and I. Swines gained his third try, which was not augmented. —Old Boys 17, Mangakahia 3.

Old Boys continued to make the game breezy, and from a movement which started from the base of the serum Abbott was given the ball, to race the remaining 13 yards and score. The kick was useless. —Old Boys 20, Mangakahia. 3.

.Althoiig'li the score indicated otherwise, Mangakahia. were playing quite good football, and were rewarded when the forwards forced near the line and Curry swerved his way over. .Rika kicked a lovely goal.—Old Boys 20, Mangakahia 8. Old Boys regained their hold on the game, and Abbott made the last score, by kicking a penalty.—Old Boys 23, Mangakahia 8. Mr .\. Ingpen refereed capably. Nt) SCORE. Fioin the kick-oil' I.ill got the I>a 11, but should have passed, and when ho was pulled down the Hikurangi forwards set up a sweeping rush which took them well into MCaramea M quarter, until Wilson gaining the ball cut in and found the line well up. A little later Griffin hud a. run, but Martin was offside and drew the movement, up. Following a free kick by Mvaramea, Webster was seen in an excellent run which carried him to half-way, bowling Lift over in his progress. The forwards did not hack up, however, and Mvaramea retaliated, the ball travelling rapidly to the other end of the field. There were some' vigorous efforts by both sides, which eased only when B. Morrosey marked. From open play if. Rika broke away and Rarity put in a great run which placed Hikurangi in a good position,.but again the forwards were slow in backing tip and play swung back to centre field again. A few seconds later Hikurangi had Mvaiiamea troubled and S. Crawford was pulled down in possession, but J. Beehre secured and made a good run, clearing the position. High tackling by several Mvaramea forwards let Hikurangi come up again and Webster 1 had an unsuccessful attempt to put a kick over from a mark. A little later 'Lift got Webster by his ankles and broke up a strong attack. When halftime came both lines were still intact. Hikurangi attacked on the resumption of play, but led by McQueen, Mvaramea retaliated and appeared almost certain to score. Lift put in a brilliant run, transferring to Bcchro, who was unable to hold the ball. Mvaramea kept up the pressure and there was a series of melees from which Mvaramea nearly scored. Hikurangi came back and Webster was again prominent

At this stage Edge received a‘kick in the back and had to leave the field. Some strenuous exchanges < followed ■the resumption of play, the ball travelling rapidly from one end of the field to the other. ’.Karamea were attacking and once Hikurangi had 13 force and several times after they were within inches of crossing, but some mishandling and keen defence prevented any score. In the final stages the ’Karamea vanguard were attacking hard, but wore unable to penetrate the Hikurangi line, and when the final whistle blew neither side had scored.
