PARNELL BY-ELECTION

VICTORY FOR REFORM DECISIVE MAJORITY. united candidate second. (Special to “Northern Advocate.’’) AUCKLAND, This Day. Victory for the Reform Party was secured at Parnell yesterday. The voting was:— W. P. Endean (Reform) 4G07 W. A. Donald (United) 3122 * T. Bloodworth (Labour) 2065 Majority for Endean 1485 The figures are provisional owing to outstanding absentee, postal and seamen’s votes, but tiro relative positions of the 'Candidates cannot be affected. Absentee votes number 256 and according to advices from other centres, last evening, 143 postal votes are in the hands of the returning officer and have still to be counted, while four seamen’s rights were issued. Parnell, an impregnable Reform stronghold for 17 years, was captured by Mr H. R, Jenkins (United) at the general election in 1928 and Mr Endean’s victory restores the seat to Reform after a break of 18 months. . The voting in 1928 was:— H. R. Jenkins (United) 5642 J. S. Dickson (Reform) 4793 J. ,IV. Yamall (Labour) 1661 Majority for Jenkins 849 The voting was considerably lighter yesterday than on the occasion of the general election. The votes east in the 1928 contest totalled 12,179 in a roll strength of 14,073, or 86.7 per cent. Allowing for absentee, postal, sea-men’s-and informal votes, those cast yesterday numbered 10,238 in a roll strength of 14,109, or 73 per cent.
