BRIDGE OVER THE WAIAROHIA
REFREISENTA TTONH TO COUNCIL. ‘ ‘ LAND AWAITS DEVELOPM LNT. 7 ’ Tlio desirability of bridging the Waiarohia River at the lower end of Cameron Street was urged upon the Wibangarei Borough Council at Its meeting on Monday 'evening by a deputation comprising Messrs d. A. Finlaysou and W. M. Fraser (Whanga-i rei Harbour Board) and Mr 1). A. IMcLean (Wliaugarei Timber Company). Air McLean said, his company had large interests which could not be developed until the river was bridged. Another point was that when the property lying on the far side had been taken into the borough, Mr Hoey and other owners had been promised access. Something should be done for these people who had been paying revenue to the (borough ancT receiving little in return. The erection of the bridge would be a step towards getting the district in closer touch with the town. Mr .T. A. Finlaysou said, the Harbour Board took the 'keenest interest in the proposed bridge, as a great deal of reclaimed property belonging to it lay across the stream. The law was that Harbour Boards’ property did not pay rates until it was let, and until opportunity was .given for the area to bo
opened up, the 'borough would not receive revenue. On behalf of Mr Woods, a large property owner across the Waiarohia, Mr Fraser asked, that something be done. The want of a bridge was keeping the development of the district back, as was showm by the fact that all the motor spirit tanks were being put in near the Dairy Company’s factory. Considering that the Harbour Board stood to gain so much Or Brake asked whether that body was prepared to contribute towards the construction costs'? Mr Finlayson said the board was debarred from doing so by law. Or Gardner said that the engineer’s estimate for a twolvo-foot bridge was £450. After the withdrawal of the deputation, it was decided that the matter be held in abeyance until a previous recommendation from the Legal and Finance Committee: ‘‘That the Harbour Board’s letter regarding the provision of land for a sower pipe line be deferred until more information is available, and in the meantime the Harbour Board bo asked to get in touch with the County Council and ascertain its intentions with regard to the proposed road to Kiorerna has been dealt Avith. ”
