BITUMENISED ROADS
CONCENTRATION 7 OF TWO. r . 1 The bitunienising of Onerahi Road, , from a point beyond. Victoria Bridge e to Punga Grove Road, and of Railway ' Road was recommended by the Works - Committee and adopted by the Wha- ; ngarei Borough Council at its meeting i on. Monday evening. Or Brake having noticed a lot of activity on Otaika Road asked what was afoot? i The Mayor replied that the. road was ■ being scarified, rolled ami metalled in . tin 1 usual way. : CV Brake considered that. Otaika - Road should lie lutumenised before • Onerahi, as it carried a tremendous . amount of through traffic. Ho ashed , the cost of sealing half the length ! this year. 1 The engineer replied that 80 chains would cost approximately £;'00. The chairman of the Works Committee, CT Tibbits, characterised Or Brake's- stand in the matter as unfair. The Works Committee had spent an hour and a half discussing the matter and had only reached its decision after the fullest, consideration. It was all very well talking about the works, but what .-about the money? The people '(if Otiaka Road were divided ; among themselves as to what they wanted done.
€r Holmes explained that Onerahi and Railway roads had been selected for bitumenising on account of the little preparation necessary, and the heavy maintenance changes. In Otaika Road it was a question of widening and if anything was done the frontagers would demand consideration. The Mayor did not consider that levelling would be necessary when the work was undertaken.
