MODERNISED TURKEY

“DAY OP REST” CHANGED,

SUNDAY SUBSTITUTES' FRIDAY.

(Times Cable.) «?(Received 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, November 17

The Constantinople correspon. dent of the “Times” states that Mustapha. Kern al, President of the Turkish Republic,- continues his policy of westernising Turkey by a sudden breach of the “Day of Rest “tradition.

Comment is caused by his opening the National Assembly on Friday, November 1.

It is now officially announced that a bill will be forthcoming at an early date to make Sunday the- “Day of Rest” instead of Friday, primarily for financial and commercial reasons. European stock exchanges and banks are to open on Friday and shut on Sunday, so Turkey must fall into line or lose a day’s business. The Government considers the losses thereby so serious during economic reconstruction that tradition must be sacrificed.
