COMMERCE TRAIN
AN HISTORIC OCCASION,
T.ANGOWAII INE LINE OPENED
(Special to “Northern Advocate.’’) RUAWAI, This Day,
Arriving at Kirikopuni during the night and parking alongside the famous railway loop, the Commerce Train made history this morning by being the first train to cany passengers over the ten miles of new line to Tangowahine. Public Works officials predict that the remaining seven miles to Dargaville will be completed 'by this time next year. Goods are now carried to Tangowahine.
Escorted by the Mayor of Dargaville, Mr P. A. Jones, and the president of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr W. Whitmore, the party motored to Dargaville and thence to RuawaJ, where a luncheon was tendered by the Otamatoa County Council and the settlers. The proceedings were of a hearty nature and a jyarni welcome was expressed Iby the county chairman, Mr R. Coates, and Mr W. T. Hunt, the riding member. Response was made by Mr Malcolm Stewart, vice-president of the Auckland Chamiber of Commerce.
The visitors were, greatly impressed by the great progress of dairying in the Ruawai district, which comprises 30,000 acres of well-drained river flats.
