ECONOMIC MERCER
AN EMPIRE IDEAL
(Received ".In p.m.) LONDON, November U
Announcing the formation of an Empire Economic Union, representative of the group of industrialists, including Lord Melchett, Sir William Austin, Sir Hugo Hirst, Sir Benjamin Morgan, Sir Henry Brittain and Sir Harry McGowan, a manifesto urges closer Empire economic co-operation .in order to secure the rapid development, of the Empire’s agricultural, mineral and manufacturing resources. Tiie signatories suggest that the nations of the Empire must either combine as an economic unit or accept absorption by other groups, Britain entering the European group and the Dominions entering the American oeonomifc orbit.
They urge that if the ideal of the free interchange of Empire products is at present unreal!sable we should get as near ns possible to modifying what ever is vexatious in our fiscal trading systems and appeal to the political world for an amnesty of past controversies leaving the Imperial Economic Conferences free to do the best for the Empire.
