SHEER SPECULATION
AUSTRALIA’S GOVERNORGENERAL,
CROWN HOLDS AUTHORITY
(Received 11.12 a.m.) LONDON, November 14
The Dominions Office dismissed as sheer speculation the revival of the old rumour that Field-Marshal Sir William Birdwood will be the next Governor-General of Australia. It was stated that the matter of Lord Stonehaven’s successor had not even been considered yet. It is unofficially mentioned that Field-Marshal Birdwood recently agreed to three months’ extension of his term in India, till the end of November, 1930, to meet the convenience of his successor, so there would be a substantial hiatus if he accepted the Australian office.
Regarding the talk of a local appointee, it is pointed out in high quarters that there is no likelihood of departure from the ruling of Mr Amery that the appointment of the Governor-General is under the Crown, to which the Commonwealth could make representation when the list of eligibjes was being considered.
