BOWLING

BRILLIANT INAUGURATION,

The members of the Hikurangi Bowling Club unite in once again heartily thanking the Dominion metoorogolist for the delightful weather he provided for the official opening of their green on Saturday the 19th instant, Mr T. H. Wilson, president of the North Auckland Centre, supported by several other prominent executives, strong representation from the Whangarei, Kensington, Portland and Waipu Clubs, together with a large muster of the public .attended the function. Mr E. J. Scott, president, in welcoming the visitors said it was extremely gratifying to himself and members of his club that this important and impatiently awaited occasion had drawn such a splendid attendance of their old bowling and other ‘ friends, despite strong counter attraction in the shape of the trotting meeting at Whangarei.

It was quite evident that ‘ ‘ the finest sport yet invented” was more popular than ever in the public mind, as it well deserved to be. A glance over the many expectant and happy faces of the bowlers present should convince those who had as yet not tasted the delights of participating in the grand old game that they were indeed missing ‘ healthful enjoyment which they could ill afford to forego. It was a wellknown fact that bowling induced a feeling of optimism and well-being in the breasts of its adherents as it was a game in which every player took an equal share throughout.. This equality was much appreciated and was no doubt largely responsible for the growing popularity the game enjoyed.

‘ Mr Scott then touched upon the splendid condition of the green an! its surroundings and he felt sure that the appreciation of those using it that day would amply repay Mr S. J. Wood, green superintendent, Mr J. Nicholson, caretaker, and other gentlemen who had worked so hard for the club during the off season.

In conclusion, the president trusted that prosperous and happy season would be experienced by all clubs in the Centre and that bowlers would thoroughly enjoy their outing that after-

noon. Mr T. H. Wilson, on behalf of the Centre, extended its best wishes to •the local club and hoped that he and other members of the executive would bo privileged to visit the Hikurangi Club on many more occasions during the season. Mr A. E. Crane, president of the Whangurei Club, then spoke in his wellknown humorous style, followed by Mr Albert the Kensington Club’s president, and Messrs Briggs and McKay, of the Portland and Waipu Clubs respectively. After the resulting applause had subsided, Mr Scott called upon his good lady to throw the Irst jack, which she successfully accomplished. The hearty applause which greeted the thrower’s feat brought the colour to her cheeks, but “kitty,” being used to such outbursts, maintained her usual undisturbed serenity. An overplus of bowlers necessitated some of the local lads remaining on the bank, but their disappointment was borne with a good grace and their services were appreciated by the ladies, who dispensed a splendid afternoon tea to all present. The following were the results of the friendly games indulged in:— Stcadman j Donaldson, Judd, Wilson (s) 25, v. Davidson, Bewick, Wood, Scott (s) !). Grant, McKenzie, Maurer, Kerr (s) 15, v.
