AUSTRALIAN SWIMMERS
MISSES COCKS AND DAVEY
VISIT TO WHANGAREI LIKELY. -
NEGOTIATIONS PROCEEDING,
With an enthusiastic membership and a capable management, all indications are that the forthcoming swimming season will be the most successful since the Whangarei Ama-i tour Swimming Club’s inception,' Preparations are proceeding quietly for the opening of the season, '
The energetic, executive of the club ■ has put in an application for a visit from the Australian champion lady* swimmers, Miss Jean Cocks 'and Edna Davcy, if the Mount Eden Swimming Club is successful in its negotiations for a visit from these swimmers. Their presence at a Whangarei swimming carnival, would give a decided impetus to the sport and provide an opportunity for local exponents to view really first-class swimming.
Miss Jean Cocks, although only 15 years o’f age, is the present Australian champion and reedrd-holder for all distances from 100 yards to. half a mile. Her times, with, the excep /r tion of those for sprint distances, are better than the best ever recorded by New Zealand swimmers. Until defeated by Miss Cocks, Miss Edna Da* vey held all Australian distance titles and represented the wealth at the Olympic Games last year. However, the records for distances greater than half a mile still stand to her credit. If a visit from these swimmers can be secured, the Whangarei season will be a busy one, for Australia’s two foremost male swimmers, N. Ryan and R. Grier, are to swim here in December in the course of a Dominion tour. It is likely, also, that several prominent Auckland swimmers will visit Whangarei during the season.
