ROAD CONDITIONS

NORTHERN SURFACES GOOD,

PADDOCK, DEVIATION FLOODED. Certain road surfaces in the district have been affected somewhat by the heavy rainfall of the past two days, bnt the Auckland Automobile Association advise that the roads in the North are in excellent condition generally, Between Kaeo and Mangonui portions of the metalled surface are rough, meaning slow travel for four lor five miles. Between Rangiahua and Okaihau, owing to railway construction work long the route, the road is pot-holed and care is necessary, owing t) several temporary crossings l laid down. From Rangiahua to Kaitaia there is a stretch of about 200 yards of clay road which is in a very bad condition, although four ears were seen to go through without chains. Later, another car had to be pulled out by horses. The stretch is passable to an experienced driver, but it should dry up in about a week if the weather remains dry. The deviation through the paddock at the county boundary was flooded at both ends yesterday with about two feet of water, and will not be passable until tomorrow, and even then chains will be required. The Mangakahia route is not passable. Those contemplating going North during the coming week-end should carry chains in case of necessity. Between Whangarci and Auckland chains "will be necessary on the clay portions of the road, but the agent of the A.A.A. recommends that the road be not used for about five days, and only then provided the weather is fine in the meantime. A driver with experience could get through with chains, but the trip will not be a pleasurable one. The North is looking particularly well and the farms are green and fresh after the welcome rain. A motorist who Came from the North yesterday recommended a visit there before going South.
