CLEAN-UP WEEK

Some time ago, the Borough Council announced its intention to institute a "Clean Up Week" in Whangarei. This decision was so wise and so timely that it earned applause. Unfortunately the decision has not materialised, for nothing further has been heard of it. This is a pity, as there is need in Whangarei for what has become an annual affair in many towns and cities throughout the Dominion. It has been pointed out very definitely, that old tins and other receptacles capable of holding water form ideal breeding pTaeos for mosquitoes, the mischief making proclivities of which are well known. The warm climate of the north is calculated to promote the spread of this pest, and strong appeals have been made for the removal of all rubbish which may assist its propagation. This, in itself should spur the Borough Council to induce townspeople to observe a "Clean Up Week." Apart altogether from the mosquito question, it is recognised that in every backyard there accumulates an astonishing quantity of material which cannot be accepted as legitimate household rubbish, but which should be removed at. least once a year. The health of a community may not depend on clean backyards, but these unquestionably contribute healthiness. It is to be hoped, therefore, that "Clean Up Week" in Whangaref will not be longer delayed. If a special timetable for collecting carts is arranged, and the public notified of the day and hour when rubbish must be ready for removal, the .hearty cooperation of townspeople may be safely anticipated.
