COALS FROM ENGLAND
QUESTION REGARDING INQUIRIES PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE ONLY (Prom Our Parliamentary Special.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Leader of the Labour Party, Mr H. E. Holland, asked the Prime Minister in the House of Representatives yesterday, whether he had seen the statement that the New Zealand Government was making inquiries regarding the prices of British, coals and the cost of shipment, apparently with a view of bringing coal from. Britain to New Zealand and whether he will take steps to ensure ,that the New Zealand coal mines are worked to full capacity, so as to ensure that all coals required in the Dominion are mined here. Sir Joseph Ward replied that an inquiry was made at Home a short time ago on behalf of the Railway Department, merely as a preliminary in connection with the situation that was likely to have presented itself in the country. The desire of the Government was that coals for the railways and for Government purposes should be obtained in New Zealand, ■
