SUPREME COURT
ADDRESS TO GRAND JURY.
ALLEGED “RINGING IN.”
(Per Press Association.—Copyright.)
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day,
In his charge to the Grand Jury at the 'Supreme Court criminal sessions, Mr Justice Adams said three men were indicted for alleged conspiracy in connection with what was commonly known as “ringing in” a horse on a racecourse at Invercargill, Gore, Ashburton, and other places. Two of .the men had made a statement. There was no doubt that they were actively concerned in some way with the horSe. The third man, Thomas James Dowler, was in a different position. Conspiracy, which Was indictable, was conspiracy to commit a crime. The Crown said that the three men conspired by making false statements that the horse entered as Imperial Thorpe was Imperial Thorpe and not another horse named Bruce, and that they conspired in order to obtain money won in races. Dowler did not seem to have had anything to do with the conspiracy. The case is proceeding.
TARANAKI CASES,
ALARMING- INDICTMENTS. (Per Press Association. —Copyright.) NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. The Suprpme Court opened .before the Chief Justice, the Kon. M. Myers, this morning. The calendar contained one ease for retrial and eight indictments against seven persons.
His Honour said he did not know that the number of indictments or prisoners was any indication of more crime than one might expect in a district of this size, but to an extent some of the eases were of an alarmjna and unsatisfactory nature. He specially referred to the case in which a man la charged with negligently driving a motor lorry so as to cause the death of a man, and his employer was charged with aiding and abetting the offence by knowingly allowing him to drive without lights. The re-trial of John Standford Ludwig on two charges of indecently assaulting a little girl of eight yi*ars, is proceeding.
