EARTHQUAKE SUFFERERS

“NORTHERN ADVOCATE” FUND.

The “Northern Advocate,” will be glad to receive and acknowledge contributions to a fund for the relief of the sufferers by the earthquake. There is urgent, need for assistance, and donations large and small will be welcomed.

A sum of over £lB was raised towards/ the Earthquake Relief Funds at a social evening held in the Ngunguru Hall last. week. There was a very good attendance, and dancing was engaged in until the early hours of the morning. Excellent accompanying music was supplied by the natives of the district and Mr A. Ferguson.

The supper was provided free of all cost by the settlers of Ngungnni and Tutukaka, and Several prizes for various competitions were also donated, Mr H. S. McKenzie was the organiser of the evening, and he also acted as M.O. At the conclusion of the social MY McKenzie and Mr Shoebridge express-; od their thanks to those who had attended and contributed to the success of the function, SUCCESSFUL SOCIAL AT MOKAU

A scene of much merriment was the Basket Social inaugurated by the residents of Helena Bay, Mokau, and Whangaruru,' and held in the Mokau Hall on August 16th.' Mr. Tom Martin and an energetic committee had transformed the hall into a veritable bower of beauty, with cool greenery and gay decorations, while the pretty dancers in their multi-coloured dresses made a charming picture. Many gifts were presented to be raffled to help swell the fund. A silk Tobe-de-nuit, given by Miss Rawiinson, and an iced cake, given by Mrs T. Martin, excited keen interest, tickets being eagerly sought. A spot waltz was won by Mrs A. Clotworthy and partner, Mr McLdod, while the Monte Carle waltz was won by Miss F. Hay and Mr Stan Wilson. There was spirited bidding for the various beautifully decorated baskets overflowing with tempting viands, and keen was the competition to secure the honour of sharing supper with "Hie fair donors. The prize for the highest-pric-ed basket was won by little Miss Edna Martin—a beautiful box of chocolates, given by Mr W. Clarke, who also secured the basket for £2 6s.

•Mr Joe Wilson made an indefatigable M.C., and loud cheers greeted the announcement, at the close of the festivities that the fund would benefit to the extent of £6O. Considering the sparsely populated districts, the result is highly creditable, and the committee who worked so hard are to be congratulated on their effort.
