again, bu't Combined rushed play back and Kerr was called upon to clear his line, A scrum resulted in front of the goal, and Finlayson burst through, but offside play spoiled the movement and Combined were awarded a free kick and ’Reid drew first (blood with an accurately aimed shot. Combined 3, North Auckland 0.

Spurred by their lead, Combined forwards began to put plenty of life into their actions and the blue pack found themselves being pushed about the field. Barrach put the ball out cleanly, but Ryan lost it and Neil lined well. Smith broke away soon after and made a brilliant dash down his wing, but was forced out, and from the line-out Barrach sent the ball out to Ryan, and Davies and Ferguson also handled. L. Connell with a good tackle brought Ms man down well and the ball returned to the forwards. Combined were penalised, but Hansen failed with the kick.

Banach again mi'.. tlio ball out well and Ryan and Davies inter-psssed, but they got nowhere and Combined forwards carried the ball at their toe. The blue pack got down and Wilkinson sent out a difficult pass that Waterman failed to hold. L. Connell gathered in the ball and cleared well, but the. blue forwards were working hard, and P. Connell was overwhelmed, failing to get the ball out to the, backs. Smith relieved a dangerous position by kicking for the line, Barrach cut round the scrum, but the ball wont out. The game was suspended at this stage, Ryan injuring his ankle and leaving the field. North Auckland were pressing hard and Waterman nearly got over, with P. Connell clinging to him. Reid had an attempt to put a free kick over from half-way, but. was not successful, Kerr saved an awkward position by a long kick. North Auckland equalised the score soon after, however. Prom a line-out an opening was created for Waterman

to get over at the coiner, Yates’ kick missed.

North Auckland 3, Combined 3

Almost immediately after a penalty was awarded to North Auckland and Hansen put the ball over the bar, ■North Auckland (>, Combined 3.

Cominbed forwards, headed by Dibble and Reid, carried play back and Kerr could not got a clear kick in. North Auckland were safe, however, and Hansen had a nice run up the side lino until a good tackb by Smith stayed his progress. Nicholls, who .was playing well, shone again when the ball came out to him, and he ran through several players tc score. The kick, failed.

■North Auckland 9, Combined 3. The game hung about midfield for some time, and then Bgrracli flashed ,the ball out to Hansen, who kicked across. Cherrington kicked out. Nickoils again broke away, but Sutherland, who was displaying, deadly tackling, pulled him down. Davis then took a clever pass and cut through, but the tackling was too good and he could not cross. Yates shone in a line-out on the last chalk-mark, and then from a scrum Barrack shot the ball out to Nicholls, wko cut through brilliantly to score again. Yates missed tke kick. North Auckland 12, Combined 3.

Half-time was called shortly after,

The second spell opened among the forwards and Fixilayson forced his way through the' ruck in a powerful terri-toty-gaining attack, Sutherland, an cx-seeondary school boy,, who was figur-ing-prominently in the- Combined team, kicked powerfully, and with Dibble and Donaldson in front things looked dangerous for North Auckland. Sterling and Smith handled cleverly, but a scrum was put down and Davies ran straight in a fine solo effort. Play was not interesting at this stage.

Yates was putting in some useful work among the forwards and broke through the serum on several occasions. Then the North Auckland backs handled, but Waterman did, not hold his pass. Waterman was not playing up to his best form. Wells was offside land then L.- Connell kicked high and Kerr cleared with a great kick to the line. Fergus was downed in possession. BRAKE SHIELD RETURNS

WHANGAREI-JUNIOR’S WIN.

Thirteen points margin

STRONG WIND SPOILS PLAY,

(Special Reporter.)

After an absence of two years the Brake Shield for junior Rugby premiership of North Auckland has returned to Whangarei. Before a large attendance at Awanui on Saturday, the Whangarei team challenged Mangonui, whom they defeated easily by 13 points to nil.

From the outset the visitors had the better of play and might easily have won by a larger margin. Luckily the weather held fine, although lowering clouds gave a throat of wet all the afternoon. Had the rain descended it is possible that the Shield would have remained in the Far North, for on the two previous Saturdays, when the ground was heavy, challenges by Hokianga and Bay of Islands -were repulsed.

A fierce wind interfered with the game to a considerable extent and little finesse" was shown by either side. Whangarei owe their success to their scrum work, and hookers especially, better knowledge of the finer points and sound defensive backs. The inside men kept the ball among themselves and there were no three-quarter movements. The teams were as follow I ,s: WHANGAREI. Full-back.—Storey. Threequarters. —Saul, Hooker, Moore. Five-eighths. —Hollows, Williams. Half.—Perry. Rover.—Maeken.

Forwards.—Care, Bindon, Squires, Halverson, Glotworthy, .Tones and Bonnet.

MANGONUI. Full-back. —Gibbons, Three-quarters, —Ducker, Lunjevich, M. Nathan,

Five-eighths. —G. Walters, T. Walt ers. Half,—A, Davies, feoVef. -“-Walsh.

Forwards. —Hunla, Robson, Richter, Te Paa, T. Nathan, V. Cooper and T. Smith.

Whangarei won the toss and elected to play with the wind. Bonnet knocked on, but Whangare} won from the scrum, and Moore and Williams made a nice run on the blind side. Mangonui held them up by marking.

Hollows tried to kick a penalty from half-way, but a “grubber” resulted. Storey kept Whangarei on the attack by lining well, and Moore judiciously cross-kicked for Saul to push the opposing winger out. By loose passing Williams spoilt two Whangarei back movements, and after ten minutes the holders attacked, Hooper lining to clear. The keen tackling of the home side was preventing the visitors from opening the game up.

A desperate dribbling dash by the blacks was held up in the nick of time by Storey, and when a scrum was put down Whangarei won possession. Perry cleverly dummied his way past the rover and half, and sent out a pass to Williams, who dropped it, but carried on with good footwork. Again Perry handled, but Saul was recalled when over the line. The blacks cleared to half vtay.

Thou the prettiest football of the 'match was seen, when Perry sent k> Hollows, Hooper and Williams, wno was tackled. The defenders were penalised, but Hollows kicked along the carpet and the quarter ended without score.

The Whangarei forwards, led by Clotworthy and Bennet, carried play into opposing territory. Robson, Nathan and Walters then participated in a very dangerous passing bout, but Williams accounted for man and ball.

Whangarei were penalised, but Davies missed putting his side ahead by inches, Moore lined' at half-way, but the blacks attacked again. Perry went down in fine style to stop them, and a black forward was warned for handling the half roughly. Then, after half an hour’s play the first score was registered. Booting through, Maekeu followed fast, but was deprived of a try by Ducker running over his own lino to force. Whangarei won from the scrum and Perry dummied a- couple to be- held up'right on the line. The blue hookers continued to do their job, s and Perry passed -to Williams to -Saul, who lost the ball, but Moore’ dashed up to touch down. Hollow’s made a weak effort to convert from the sideline. Whangarei 3, Mangonui 0.

A very fine breakaway was made by Walsh, the Mangonui rover, but Hob lows snapped the ball up to clear. Just before the half-time bell, Davies had an ineffectual, attempt to equalise by way of a penalty,, and the challengers were still three up at* the interval.

• After half-time Hollows changed places with Williams, who had not been handling Surely -at ' first fiveeighths. Upon restarting a determined forward attack, in which good footwork was shown, had Mangonui on the run. Moore was given a mark, but in common with the goal-kicking throughout his attempt was futile. Weak handbig by both sides was .spoiling attempts at concerted play. AidOd by strong wind, Whangarei were dominating the situation. The ball w r eht along the back line as far as Williams, who sent out a weak pass to Hooper. 1 Quick thinking allowed Moore to drop kick a beautiful goal from near the sideline.

Whangarei 7, ■ Mangonui 0.

The local supporters were beginning to realise that unless several miracles happened the Shield would shortly pass from their hands, and cheered their side on vociferously, Mangonui set up an assault. Storey held them up by falling with the ballj and when T. Walters was rauglit coming round the scrum too quickly Whangarei cleared and attacked. Hooper followed his kick to see Mangonui force. Again Walters was penalised for tackling Perry while the ball w T as still in the scrummage, and Moore qualified for a place in the Wairarapa team by kicking the penalty. Whangarei 10, Mangonui 0.

Moore had another try to get in the scoring list essaying a drop kick from the line and missing narrowly.

Two converted tries were needed, to keep the Shield north of Whakaparawhen the teams turned round for the last spell. Straightaway the ball was kicked into the creek, and when returned, Perry, and then Williams, hack at first five-eighths, let it through their hands, and the holders surged upheld. T. Walters broke clean away, but forgot he was 'well supported, and was brought low by Moore. Still a score looked likely butJStorey relieved by kicking along the ground out of bounds. Perry stopped a black rush by marking, and after a long spell at defence Whangarei crossed the halfway mark.

Play had degenerated, Mangonui seeming tired and Whangarei satisfied with their lead.

However, the tourists were intended to further widen their margin. Clotw’orthy handed on to Bindon from a line-out. The latter ran strongly down the line, and touched dowm at the corner as he was tackled. The kick w r as disallowed.

Wihangarei 13, Mangonui 0. For the few minutes remaining Mangonui did all the pressing, Storey being twice called upon to clear. Mr C, Nicholson, the referee, gave every satisfaction to both losers and winners, (Continued oh Page 10.)
