KRISHNAMURTI

The nows that Krishnamurti, tne young Hindu poet and philosopher, lias ' decided to abolish the Order of the Star, of which he has been the head since its inception in 1911, will cause many to speculate as to who and what this young man is, and how his teach- ' ing differs from that of other young leaders of thought. He has been generally referred to by the members of the Order of the Star as the World . Teacher, for it is believed by them that he represents a reincarnation of the Great One who is in . charge , of the religious thought of the world, and whose work it is, in the “Inner Government” of the world, to put forth from time to time some now aspect of . Truth to meet the needs of a particular age and type. Krishnamurti, who by the way, objects to the title “New Messiah, ’ ’ which lias been thrust upon him by the American press, says that there is only one Truth, and that a 1! religions are expressions of that Truth. His own teaching is “the essential oneness of all things: unity in seeming di-. versify, simplicity in apparent complexity.” He stresses the optimistic note of “unceasing progress through the evolution of both form and spirit, the slow improvement of the former being due to the increasing needs of the latter, which requires better vehicles through which to express it self.” Born in Madras, India, Krishnamurti is a little over 30 years of age, No actual record of his ibirth was kept, so that his ago cannot be definitely fixed. His parents were high-caste Brahmins, his father being a member of the Thoosouhical Society, which has its world headquarters at Adyar, Madras, India. His mother died while he was still a small child. The boy, who was adopted by Mrs Annie Bosant, grew up and lived the life of the normal Brahmin child, though at an early age he showed traces of a mentality and spiritual development much superior to the average. At the age of eleven he produced the little book “At. the Poet of the Master,” which has sold in hundreds of thousands. It was in 1925, at the Theosophical Conference in Benares, that, in the language of a member of the order, “the first public manifestation of his spiritual power was felt. Thousands of people from all parts of the world were gathered to hear Krishnamurti, who suddenly seemed to be imbued with a power greater than his- normal self and spoke words that electrified his listeners. * Since that time his power has been steadily increasing, and today, whenever and wherever he speaks l —and ho is constantly travelling from place to place—thousands listen as in a trance, spell-bound by the exquisite nobility of his bearing and his teaching.” Over and over again Krishnamurti says that his only desire is “to present Truth, that men may gather it. He asks that people forget Krishnamurti, the individual, and judge his message instead.” That may be stated as his main reason for disbanding the Order of the Star, for ho sees the danger in an organisation which may mistake the messenger for the Truth he brings, and cause people to lose themselves in a respect for the organisation at the expense of the purpose for which it was created.
