SMUGGLING OPIUM
STEWARD CAUGHT IN THE ACT
HEAVY FINE IMPOSED
(Per Press Association.—Copyright.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A ship’s steward, Charles Duustan, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon with having imported prepared opium into the Dominion. He pleaded guilty.
The Collector of Customs .said the accused was on the Maheno which arrived from Sydney yesterday morning. Just before midday he was .seen walking up the wharf, wearing an overcoat, among a number of waterside workers. Customs Officer Galley became suspicious of him and suggested that he had something concealed under the coat. On searching Dunstan, Galley found in number of tins of opium of: an approximate value of £IBO. Accused was fined £125 and an order was made for confiscation of opium, in default three months * imprisonment.
