LOWERING ASPECT
j COLLIERIES IMPASSE I ! OWNERS REJECT PROPOSALS ENGINEERS TAKE NEW STAND. (Australian Press Association.) (Received 9 a.m.) ■SYDNEY, June 13. Inquiries tonight elicited information showing that the coal crisis had become more gloomy. Tt is understood that the basis of the miners’ proposal for their return to work immediately was that they wore .prepared to work at reduced wages, providing the owners guaranteed to refund the reductions if their figures as to costs of carrying on the ■industry were proved wrong. The miners’ conference was resumed today, but it was doomed unlikely that: they would reach any decision regarding the proposal to withdraw the safety men from pits until Monday, when the engine drivers’ secretary, Mr Aitldns, is duo from Melbourne, to where he is going tonight. The owners conferred and decided to reject the miners’ proposals. It is reliably stated that the Enginedrivers and Firemen’s Union Executive has sent an ultimatum to the minors’ representatives demanding the withdrawal of mass pickets at the northern collieries and disciplining their loaders there, failing which withdrawal of the safety men would take place at the end of the week. At the conclusion of the miners’ conference the ifo.llo.wing statement was issued to the Press: “The combined unions have‘arrived at a policy and have adjourned with complete understanding and , • unanimity.” The date of resumption of the conference has not been fixed.
