HOUSE TOTALLY DESTROYED
FIRE IN PORTLAND ROAD. ■ BRIGADE HELPLESS. " The second serious fire in Whangaroi during the week occurred at about 12.15 p.m. today, when a small house owned by Mrs T. Marvin, and situated in Portland Road, was totally destroyed. . \ - The alarm was. given shortly- after noon and in a few minutes the building was a. raging inferno. The Fire Brigade turned out promptly, but owing to the absence of fire plugs in the vicinity could do nothing at all, and ■the house was burnt , to- the ground in under an hour. -..N0, theory ’’can be put forward as. to the cause of the conflagration, as no fife had been lit in the house for some time, and it was also at the time unoccupied, Only a small chest-of-drawers was saved. Tip? Are at.its height presented a spectacular sight and attracted a. number of spectators. Fortunately, the house was isolated from any other buildings and there was no danger of the outbreak spreading. The only water in the vicinity was a three-quarter inch domestic main, but had there been a plug it is considered that, the house could have been saved from total destruction.
