The. Otaki Hospital was reopened yesterday by the Minister of Health before a good attendance.
The next athletic championship meeting is to be held at Wanganui and March Id has been suggested ns the date. Mrs Percy, Dodds, who was knocked over by a cyclist at Otaki a week ago, died last night without regaining consciousness. / The institution of a telephone exchange at Waikiekie -was brought before the Hon. H. Atmore by .Messrs Stevens and Babe this morning. The Minister promised to place their representations before the Postmaster-Gen-eral.
Under the will of the late' Sophia Bates, a resident of Dannevirke for many years, the Dannevirke Hospital benefits by a legacy of an estimated value of £IOOO, which it is proposed to devote towards the cost, of erecting a maternity home.;- -
At the inquest on' Francis O’Donnell, who was drowned while inspecting flood damage at Meeanee, on May 19 last, a verdict of accidental death was returned. The Coroner congratulated Messrs Burgess and Muir, especially the latter, on their efforts to rescue the deceased. ■
The members of the Whangarei Borough Council and Harbour Board met on. the ground yesterday to discuss proposed • outlets for the sewerage system. After some discussion it, was decided that the Harbour Board be asked to reconsider the question of placing the outfall tank on the mudflats. Air J. Ball, Editor-Annmineer of the New Zealand Broadcasting Company, and members of the mechanical staff, will arrive in Whangarei on (Saturday to make arrangements for the broadcasting of the (band concert on Sunday evening. Mr Bail is taking advantage of liis visit to Whangarea to meet radio dealers and listeners-in, and has arranged to hold a. public meeting in the Y.M.C.A. Hall on Monday evening next. This will allow' listeners-in to voice any suggestions they may have for the improvement of broadcasting conditions in Whangarei, 1 and the company ’s official representative will be able to obtain ait first hand the local point of view'.
A deputation, comprising Mr Macken, chairman of the Whan an aid School Committee, and the headmaster, Mr McDonald, waited on Mr A. Burns, chairman of the Auckland Education Board yesterday with reference to improvements to the Whananaki School. The building, it was stated, W'as 54 years old and totally inadequate for the increased attendance, which had increase] owing to the opening of a bush camp in the locality. Tw'o teach ers had to conduct their classes in the one room, Mr Burns asked that full details bo supplied to the hoard, and promised that the board’s architect would inspect the headmaster’s residence, which was reported to be in a state of dilapidation.

In the Snooker Tourney now in progress at the Club Billiard Saloon, the most up-to-date room in the north, the second round will soon commence. The attention of competitors is drawn to this fact. The results of the various games will be published at. a later date.
Advice has been received by Sir j Apirana Ngata, Minister in charge of j the Cook Islands, that the newly erected wireless station at. the small isolated island of Manke will lie opened for traffic, on June 10. While hunting wild pigs early this week, Mr Selwyn Hayward, of Mangapai, was ripped on a hand by one of the -beasts, necessitating some stitches and a visit to the Whangarei Public Hospital. The injury is not serious and the wound is making rapid progress towards healing.
The management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union decided that Mr Yates, a senior B grade selector, be debarred for the remainder of the season from holding any official position in the Union. This was the result of a report by the referee of the Lin-wood-Merivale B tnaitch that Yates spoke to him offensively after the match concerning his rulings.
The box plan for the Whangarei Orchestral .Society’s Concert, to be held in the Town Hall next Tuesday, is now open at Blanshard’s. A splendid programme has been arranged for this, the first of the present, season’s concerts, The supporting artists are Miss Molly Wright, who is the leading ’cellist of Auckland, Mrs J, W. Hall, elocutionist, and Mr Hugh Carrut.h, baritone. , The orchestral numbers will include the “Caliph of Baghdad,” overture; the Andante (Movement from Schubert’s
