MEDICAL CLUB AT WAIPU, Tlu l committee set up hy r he Whangs re i Hospital Board to investigate the position 'of the Woipu Mod ion! Club, which at the May mooting was reported to bo .C.n'9 behind in subscrip--11 oris, roportod verbally yesierday, Atr T. Ellis (huugiit that, ;;f a result of the’ visit of flu* committee to Waipu everything would be satisfactorily arranged. A meeting had been called and the club put on a sound basis. The new secretary would see that the outstanding accounts were collected. The meeting unanimously resolved to retain the services of a resident doctor
at Waipu. In fairness to the people of Waipu, | Mr J. A. S. Mac Kay thought it should [ be'made clear that the reason the subscriptions had not boon paid was because they had not been asked for. The chairman had been an invalid for 'some time, and little interest had been {taken in the affairs of the elub. When j the people were asked to pay he was j sure that their response would be wilI bng. j Air F. Higginson moved that the action of the sub-committee be apI proved by the board. Air J. X. Ale Carroll did not agree, contending that on such an important matter a written report should have been tabled as a record for future reference. There had been a deficiency of £SOO, the committee had not collected sixpence, and yet there was not a ‘ ‘ scratch of the pen” to show what they had done. The matter was too serious to let drift. In the event of the money not being forthcoming, the Hospital Board would bo saddled with the liability. While confident that the money would bo collected, Air D. A. AlcLean agreed that a report should have been tabled.
The chairman apologised for this omission, and suggested that the new resident medical officer, Dr Greenwood, should not be appointed for a long
period. Mr MeCarroll considered that the request for the appointment of a doctor should come from the Medical Club, which would relieve the Hospital Board of the responsibility. Mr F. Elliott agreed with this. There had been very unbusiness-llke dilatoriness in the affairs of the club, and in ■view of the light which had been thrown upon it, the criticism of the board for the non-insurance of the doctor’s dwelling had been particularly uncalled for and unjustified. Air Higginson withdrew his motion that the action of- the committee be approved, until a report from it could be embodied .in the minutes. It was decided to write to the eluD explaining the position, and pointing out that the request for the appointment of a doctor should come through the club.
Dr Greenwood was appointed locum tenons for two months.
The. matter will be discussed further at The special meeting on Friday even-
ing, by which time members of the committee were conldent some of the outstanding subscriptions would have been paid in.
