LADIES’ HOCKEY

TWO SPLENDID GAMES. COMPETITION CONTINUED. RESULTS. Old Girls fi, Hinemoa 1. | Avoca 5, Kia Ora 1. Hockey partisans enjoyed a splendid programme at the Recreation Ground, Hikurangi, yesterday, when two teams from Whangare.i met the local clubs. There was a large attendance, showing that the bright play of the girls is winning favour. It was very pleasing to see the ground marked out to such advantage, but unfortunately many spectators infringed on the playing area. There was a surprisingly large number of injuries, and the presence of two members of the Ladies’ Division of the St. John -Ambulance Brigade was very helpful and much appreciated. FADE AT THE FINISH. Hinemoa opened in great style against Old Girls, who had no time to adjust their thinking caps before they wore one goal to the bad. Howover, as the game continued the home side lost much of its dash, and-at the finish did not appear to be the same team. The outstanding players for Hikurangi were Misses Gomez, Rowe,. R. Codling and L. Harris, and for Old Girls Misses T. Sloanc, B. Crawford, G. Goode, D. Stirling and R. Tibbits.

The teams took the field as fol

lows. — Hinemon. —Misses I). Gomez, goal; T. "Rowe ami Mrs Mack, full-hacks; Misses E. Codling, p. Neill ami P. Dunn, half-backs; K. Hanvaki, M. Jackson, J. Wilson, J. Cairns, ami L. Harris, forwards. Old Girls. —Misses G. Goode, goal; T. Sloane and K. Bireh, full-backs; K. Piekniere, M. Simons and M. Smcdley, half-backs; B. 'Crawford, E. Simons, D. Stirling, E. Tibbits and E. Eichards, forwards. Old Girls won the opening bully and instituted an attack on Miss Crawford's wing. It broke down near the circle and Misses Hanvaki and Codling put a different aspect on affairs, clearing to their forwards. A thrust to the goal .saw Miss P. Dunn score in the first minute. The score had been something of a shock to Old Girls, who at once attacked'. Miss Eowo cleared and Miss Harris sped along the line. Sound defensive work by Misses Birch and Sloane stayed the invaders. In a twenty-five bully Miss Tibbits won the ball, but was stopped by Miss Jackson, and Hikurangi pressed until pulled up for obstruction. Miss M. Simons gave Old Girls relief, and play being taken up by Miss Eichards, the centre-forward had a shot which sailed over the bar. At this stage, how-, ever, Hinemoa were combining splendidly, and Miss Cairns hit out to Miss Harris, and the forwards swept into the circle. Here Miss Goode ran out and used her pads to stop. The issue was being made very, open. Miss Crawford cleared for a time, but Mrs Smith again put her side on .the attack and a pack of of redcoats were in Old Girls' circle. Miss M. Simons robbed Miss Harris of a goal and Miss Bireh hit upheld, and Old Girls set up a determined siege. Mrs Smith eventually cleared and Miss Haurakl put out to Miss Harris, who had the crowd on their toes in expectation of a '.score, but Miss Goode was equal to the emergency. She hit out to Miss Crawford, who sot out iu a dccr-like run. Miss Tibbits got offside in the circle, but play swung back and from a scramble Miss Stirling hit into the corner of the net, making the scores equal after half an hour's play. Miss Simons set Old Girls in full ery again. Miss Gomez made a mishit and Miss Tibbits shot, a goal. Then two unfortunate accidents marred the pleasure of the game. Miss E. Eichards was struck on the side of the head by the ball, ami although she continued after a short spell was far from recovered. A minute later a fast-rising shot struck Miss E. Codling of the Hinemoa team, just above the eye, causing a deep gash. Miss Hutchinson took-her place. Play after half-time was not nearly so interesting or so even. Miss Tibbits started the Old Girls’ monopoly when she took the hall with her from the re-start. Miss Gomez lined, hut there was a thrill when Miss Crawford came up like lightning and centered, for Miss Tibbits to score. Miss Crawford won the next goal for herself with an irresistible shot, making Old Girls 4 to Hinemoa's 1. Tlio Hinemoa half line cleared and Miss Harris had a good run. The visitors attacked again, and Miss Tibbits struck an upright with a hard shot, j Then 'Miss Tibbits had another go, and the goalie never saw the ball. —Old Girls 5, Hinemoa 1. Old Girls were having all the better of the, game, and Miss Stirling was pulled up for sticks as she shot a goal. Then Miss Eichards got past the defence and slim a goal from the circle's edge. Two splendid saves by the goalie were all that, kept the score from mounting, and the game ended.—Old Girls (!. Hinemoa 1. Messrs C. Clmsell and J. Batchelor refereed. j

AVOCA V. KLA ORA. Owing in accidents in tin; first <4;!me, tin' teams for tilt l Kia Ora — Ayiicii man’ll did not t.ako 1 lu* liidd until after half-past .three. This game was

not nearly so spectacular as its forerunner, but was a first-rate exposition of rugged hockey, with Avoca having the better of play consistently after the first 20 minutes. Miss 0. Harris W'as outstanding for the beaten team, and her presence in the forwards after half-time greatly strengthened the attack. Misses Mcllroy, Hertzel and Crozier wore the best of the remainder. The outstanding Avoca players were Mesdames McLeod and Martin and Miss Woods. The teams were as follow's; —

Kia Ora. —Misses D. Thomas, goal; B. Hayward and J. McKinlay, fullbacks; S. Mcllroy, I. Ward and V. Hertzel, halves; 0. Harris, 0. Meyer, D. Hayward, L. Crozier and J. Ross, forwards. Avoca. —Misses S. Balbe, goal; P. O’Grady ami Mrs Martin, full-backs; Misses M. Woods, O. Banbury and D. Osborne, halves; Airs AlcLood, Misses P, Weir, E. Bench, AL Dent and AL Bovington, forwards.

Within the first minute Aliss Dent scored for Avoea. Play then settled down to attack and counter-attack with little between the teams. Just as Avoea had scored right at the start of the first half, so Hikurangi retaliated when the game was resumed. Aliss 0. Harris made an opening and the ball glided off the goalie into thc.net: Avoca, stirred by the score pressed, but were pulled up for offside, and Aliss B. Crozier took play into the opposing territory. Avoca returned to the attack. After a lengthy spell on the defensive Aliss Harris broke away at the head of an attack which nearly resulted in Miss Crozier scoring. The Hikurangi team were attacking when Aliss Woods secured the ball, and running, down the centre of the field passed Aliss AlcKinlcy, and, reaching the circle’s edge, struck for a. wonderful solo score. —Avoea 2, Kia Ova. 1. Both teams attacked alternately. Airs AlcLood by adept stiekwork kept Kia Ora. quiet, and Miss Boreieh netted. The next 1 Avoca score went to Aliss Weir,

The home side had faded away, and by quick passing among their forwards, Avoca found their way into the circle, for Mrs' McLeod to notch another score.

Kia. Ora. at length cleared by way of Aliss Mcllroy, who sent on to Miss Crozier, who took play to the other end, where Airs Martin cleared and the game ended.—Avoca 5, Kia Ora 1.

Messrs J. Batchelor and B. Laurie handled the whistles.
