TUBERCULOSIS
GROUP SCHEME FAVOURED. MANOFJJ VRING ALLEGED. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The North Canterbury Hospital Board considered the proposals of the Hospital Boards’ Association Conference that the New Zealand hospital boards should divide into groups for the control of tuberculosis in New Zealand, two groups in the North Island and two in the .South.
Mr A. T, Smith, chairman of the Public Health Committee, moved; “That with a. view to carrying out a campaign against tuberculosis on uniform lines the board approve of the formation of one group only for the South Island, wiheh course would probably lead to greater efficiency and economy, and that all boards in the South Island bo ashed to agree to this suggestion. ’ ’
Mr Smith said the North Canterbury Board started the campaign against tuberculosis in Now Zealand and it was up to it to move in the matter. The Hospital Boards’ Association divided the country into four districts. If there was one board for the South Island they would be able to treat the island as a whole. From the viewpoints of efficiency and economy one board was wanted in the South Island. Dispensaries could be located in different towns and patients could be examined in those towns.
Mrs McCombs moved as an. amendment that the matter be held over for a month.
Mr Smith: I am used-to this manoeuvring. I Ido not care! if you postpone it for a month or forever. They will come crying to me tomorrow to get isomebody in. Let them cry. The amendment was carried.
