SUNDAY EXCURSION TRAIN
BOTHER OVER LOCOMOTIVE. INTO PROTEST, LODIGEB. RISK NEGLIGIBLE. (Per Press Association.—Copyright.) WELLINGTON, This Bay. When' the telegram from Christchurch in reference to an excursion train on Sunday being taken through the Otiria tunnel by steam was referred to the officials at headquarters, it was stated that no official protest had been received from the englnedrivors. The 'Chief Mechanical Engineer, Mr Lynde, was emphatic that no risk whatever was involved as heavier excursion trains than the one being discussed had been run by steam locomotives on grades quite as steep as that of the tunnel, which is one in 33. In this case there would bo no steaming in the tunnel as the grade from Arthur's Pass to Otiria would permit of the locomotive which brought the train from Christchurch simply drifting down.
