WINTER SHOW CONCLUDED
A SPLENDID SUCCESS,
DESPITE ADVERSE WEATHER,
The most attractive Winter I'xhibi tion ever staged by the Whangarei A and P, Society came to. a close on Sat urday evening, when; despite the per sistent rain, the buildings were throng ed with sightseers.
The conduct, of the show throughout the five, days was splendid, and great credit-is due to the president, Mr L. W. Nelson, ’ the very energetic committeemen, and the outstanding work of Air C. P. Butler, the secretary, who deservedly added .to his popularity among all who came in contact with the executive side,' ,
The show followed on one of the most severe hurricanes which has ever visited the Whangarei district, and not. for a. single day during its progress was . the ?un seen for more than a brief interval. Exhibitors, sideshowmen and officials had to contend with most unpleasant conditions, but all boro up good-humouredly, and in many cases arrangements were made which combated the weather.. The attendance increased from 11,621 last year to 11,797, although included in the figures this year wmre a large number of school children, who last year attended in parties with their teachers and were not chocked.
The takings, at the turnstiles were about £9O under those for 1928, when the receipts were £SOO 13s fid. The attendance of 11,797 has actually never been eclipsed.
The guessing competition associated with the attendance caused a great deal of interest- Mr T. Wells, whose estimate was 11,800, receives the handsome ..mounted stag’s head and a pair of mounted antlers, presented by Mr W. J. Bell. Sets of antders were also "presented to hliss G. G. Bulley, the next nearest, whose guess was 11,777, and to Mr C. J. Hamblyn, 11,843, CHOPPING. The . chopping competition drejv a, large attendance on. Saturday afternoon, and some very keen axemanship was witnessed.
In the 14-inch Standing Chop the finishing order was M. Griffon 1, W. Paul 2, M. J. Nash 3, The time w r as 50 sec. Grifferi winning by two seconds. A protest was lodged, and the judges were unable'to arrive -at a decision. Jt has been referred to headquarters, the Northern Atheltie Union, for a ruling.
