According to the Commonwealth Minister of Health (Sir Neville Howse), who presided at a. meeting of the Federal Advisory Cancer Committee, reports presented to the meeting showed that patients who had received .treatment -since the. Federal campaign was begun a year ago had shown marked improvement. The xc suits more than justified the Ministry’s action in purchasing 10 grammes of radium for £IOO,OOO, provided from the surplus in the financial year 192728. "
Sir’ Neville Hawse -said that it had been decided that the Federal Ministry .Should manufacture its own apparatus for handling radium instead of importing the equipment. -A small laboratory would be provided for (the purpose in the physics section of the University of Melbourne. Some the radium would, be changed from the type required for emanations to that suitable- for hospital use. The suggestion that the prevalence of skin cancer in Australia was due in part to the effeiet of the climate qh white (skins would be investigated. He said at present it was only a suggestion not a definite medical theory.
