FIVE BY-ELECTIONS
EVE OF GENERAL POLL. INTENSE INTEREST. (Australian Press Assn. —United Service.) (Received 11.5 a.m.) LONDON, March 17. Five by-elections this week will be worth watching, in view, of the general election. All were conservative seats, with the following majorities at the last election. —East' Toxteth 9519, Eddisbury 1669, Bath 7267, North Lanark 2028 and Holland with Boston 4770. All will be three-cornered contests except Eddisbury, where it is a straight-out light between a Liberal and a Conservative. The * ‘ Observer ’' says: 1 ‘ Government defeats at East Toxteth, Bath and Holland would be gloomy for the general election. The Liberals ought to win Eddisbury, if there is anything like a Liberal revival, concerning which there has been .so much speculation. Mr Lloyd George has been stumping the constituency, addressing 10 meetings a day. North Lanark may lose the Conservative candidate. 111-feeling is widespread). .Some means ought to be found for avoiding a. crop of by-elections so near the appeal to the" country."
