SHOP-FRONT THEFTS
SEQUEL IN POLICE COURT. A jaunt round town involving the theft of several articles of a total value of £ll 17s 6d had its sequel in the Whangarei Police Court, before MjessrS J. S. Dent and F. Farmer, Justices of the Peace, this morning, when William James Smith and James Silby were Charged with stealing on Saturday, March .16, two pairs of men’s boots valued at £2 17s 6d, the property of W. Maine, and one suit of clothes and seven pairs of socks valued at £5 10s, 'the property of R. G. Hosking. Smith was also charged with stealing one suit of clothes valued at £3 15,5, the property of Henry Wilson,
“It is a very serious matter," said Senior-Sergeant 0 'Grady, in asking for a severe penalty. The tw r o me,n had been in the town since Thursday last looking for work, and had been sleeping on the waterfront. They had been loafing about the town and later .they took lodgings at fiansard's boardinghouse. The stolen goods were discovered under the bed in the lodgings. A drastic penalty was asked for, as it was a very grave matter if shopkeepers w r ere not able to display their goods without the danger of them being stolen. Smith had a previous conviction for obscene language.
Each was sentenced to one month'? imprisonment on each • charge, and an order was made for the return of the stolen goods.
