WIRELESS MESSAGES

A WONDROUS INVENTION SPEECH AND TELEGRAMS TOGETHER. TRANSMISSION OVER 3000 MILES. (United Service.) (Received 11.26 a.m.) LONDON, March 4, The “Daily Mail” recounts a revolution in wireless telephony which is another triumph of the inventive genius of the Marconi organisation. A demonstration was given at the Bridgwater beam station of transmitting speech 3000 miles to the Marconi Company’.s vice-chairman at Montreal by a multiplex system on the same wave length simultaneously with two wireless telegrams, uninterruptedly relaying to London hundreds of words per minute. The invention, uniquely incorporating efficiency and economy, may' be applied to all beam stations in the Imperial chain, avoiding the necessity of erecting new or adding to existing telephonic stations. Sir Basil Blackett, the Rt. Hon. F. G. Kellaway, other high officials, and M. Mathieu, the inventor of the process, .witnessed the demonstration and carried on a conversation with perfect audibility with officials at Montreal. When the messages were received they were sorted out by Morse coders, continuing unassisted. The spoken messages were regulated, fading checked, and uniformity of tone maintained. immediately the speaker pauses an automatic regulator permits the answer to come, as simultaneous speaking jams communication, - , The invention secures almost complete secrecy. Listening-in is impossible without a similar installation, ■ An apparatus is being prepared for the South African beam station. Inter-Imperial adoption would enormously cheapen communication, enabling four telegraphic and one telephonic communication on the same wave-length simultaneously.
