ELECTRICITY IN BRITAIN

Details of the fifth scheme of the Central Electricity Board, which covers, the middle-oast area of England, were published today. There now remains to be prepared a scheme for north-east England, south-west England and. South Wales, also a small supplementary scheme for Norfolk and Suffolk.

When these schemes have been passed it is hoped that a complete outline of a national scheme to embrace England, Scotland and Wales will toe available, probably before the end of ,tlie year. Under the present scheme the existing 40 generating stations will toe reduced to 18. Aa a result the Electricity Commissioners estimate that there will be an average saving of well iover £250,000 a year.

An area of about 7545 squate miles is dealt with in the scheme. It embraces a population' of about 4,666,500 and includes densely-populated industrial centres where there arc coalmines, iron and steel works, textile mills and engineering works. The counties concerned are Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottijngharashire, as well as Lincoln and Rutland.
