THE LIGHT WHICH FAILED

ELECTRICAL BOWLERS' ECLIPSED.

The Whangarei Bowling Club’s green was the scene of a most important game yesteray, when the Borough Council Works Commit toe, represented by tho chairman, Cr. E. G, W. Tibbits, and the engineer, Mr J. Archer, met the Electrical 'Committee, whoso colours were borne by the chairman, Cr. A. H. Curtis, and tho engineer, Mr W. J. Dawson. The respective chairmen acted as skips. In the first head the Works skip turned the score from one to four with his last. bowl. The Electrical representatives enlightened proceedings by notching one on the second. Tho third head gave Works Committee a brace and the pair continued to score untill (the eighth head, when Dawson drew two beauties that were not shifted. On the eleventh ifead the score was —Works 15, Electrical 3, and the hopes of the power men were glimmering faintly. At this stage, however, they brought science ■to their aid. The electric lights were turned on, making conditions rather puzzling for the Works Committee, who were used to operating under the rays of tho sun. This gave the Electrical Committee a chance ,to forge ahead. The Works Committee skip, however, was playing a very safe game, not disturbing the head and allowing the opposing pair to score a single on each until the final, when the Electrical Committee scored two, making the final , score —Works 23, Electrical 16.

The engineer of the Electrical Committee straightway challenged, on behalf of the staff, for a fours game against the best of the Borough Council. This was accepted by the Deputy Mayor.
